How to Apply for a Study Permit?
The application cost for a Canada Student Permit is CAD 150$ [INR 8, 741]. For students of Indian origin, there are two modes through which they can apply.
Student Direct Stream (SDS)
For any Indian resident with legal status, this is the best way to apply because it’s faster than the other option. Usually, applications are processed within 20 days after submitting the form.
In this method, everything happens online. You have to provide all the necessary documents and your biometric information to complete the application process for a Canadian student permit through the Student Direct stream.
Canada Student Permit Application
Any non-Canadian resident can choose this method to apply. The requirements for a regular Study permit application are similar to the student direct stream, but it takes a little longer to process the application using this approach. Additionally, you have the option to complete this application online or offline.
To access the application form and all the necessary information for both methods, you can visit the official website of the Canadian Government. By following the link and creating an account, candidates can complete the entire procedure and obtain a Canada Student Permit.
How long can you stay in Canada with a study permit?
A study permit normally lasts for the duration of your program plus an additional 90 days. You have 90 days to prepare to depart Canada or to request a stay extension.
1. If you’re taking prerequisite courses
If your school asks you to take courses before getting accepted into the main program (called conditional admission), your study permit will be valid for the duration of those courses plus one extra year. Once you’re accepted into the main program, you need to apply for an extension to continue staying as a student.
2. If you’ll finish your studies after your study permit expires
If you do not complete your courses by the expiration date on your permit, you must request to extend your student visa. You’ll have to stop studying and leave Canada if you don’t.
3. If you finish your studies before your study permit expires
If you finish your studies ahead of schedule, your permit will expire 90 days after you complete them, regardless of the date stated on the permit. Your studies are considered complete when your school sends you a completion letter, transcript, degree, or diploma for the first time. You need to provide evidence of the date when your school informed you or when you received your degree, diploma, or certificate. If you don’t have proof, we will use the earliest date mentioned on the document. This date can be confirmed with your school.
