GUIDELINES FOR ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS FOR SPECIAL ENLISTMENT INTO THE NIGERIAN NAVY DIRECT SHORT SERVICE COMMISSION COURSE 29
1. Applications are hereby invited from suitably qualified Nigerians for special enlistment into the Nigerian Navy through the Direct Short Service Commission (DSSC) Course 29. Online registration starts on 27 December 2023 and closes 7 February 2024. The departments and entry requirements are listed below.
2. Medical: The following medical fields with requisite entry qualifications are available:
- Medical Officers/Dental Surgeons: MBBS or
MBBCh and BDS for medical doctors and dental surgeons respectively. All must be fully registered by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and possess
a current practising license. - Pharmacy: B.Pharm/Doctor Pharmacy degree and full registration with the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria as well as having a current practising license.
- Medical Lab Science: BMLS and be fully registered with the Medical Laboratory Scientist Council of Nigeria as well as possess a current practising license.
- Radiographer: BSc in Radiography with current practising license.
- Physiotherapy: B.Physiotherapy or BMR (Bachelor of Medical Rehabilitation). Must be registered with the Medical Rehabilitation Therapist Registration Board of Nigeria (MRTB) and possess a current practising license.
- Optometry: Doctor of Optometry. Must be a fully registered optometrist, dispensing optician by the Optical Council of Nigeria and have a current practising license.
- Medical Records/Health Information Management: BSc/HND required with current practising license.
- Clinical Psychology: BSc in Clinical Psychology and Applied Psychology, with current practising license.
- Biomedical Engineer: BSc/HND in Biomedical Engineering with current practising license.
- Public Health Officer: BSc/HND in either Environmental Health or Community Health Information and Education. Must be fully registered with the Environmental Health Officers Registrations Council of Nigeria (EHORCON) and possess a current practising license.
- General Nursing/Midwives: B.NSc RN and RM with current practising license. Post basic qualification in any of the following fields will be an added advantage:
- Accident and Emergency Nurse.
- Intensive Care Unit Nurse.
- Peri-Operative Nurse.
- Ophthalmic Nurse.
- Dialysis/Renal Nurse.
- Social Welfare Officer/Nutritionist: BSc, practising license from relevant regulatory bodies, registered member of the professional board.
- Occupational Therapist: BSc, practising license from relevant regulatory bodies, registered member of the professional board.
3. Engineering: B.Sc or B Eng qualifications in the following fields:
- Control Engineering.
- Naval Architecture/Ship Design.
- Marine Engineering (Mechanical).
- Marine Engineering (Electrical).
- Mechatronics Engineering.
Membership of Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria (COREN) will be an added advantage.
4. Information and Communication Technology:
B.Sc/ B.Tech/ B.Eng in Computer Science or Computer Engineering. Priority will be given to candidates with relevant qualifications in:
- Networking and Network Administration.
- Programming and Software Development.
- Server and Database Administration.
- Cyber Security.
- Computer Forensics/Digital Investigation.
- Robotics and Artificial Intelligence.
Certification in relevant fields will be an added advantage.
5. Legal Service: LLB and BL. LLM in International Maritime Law, International Law or Forensic Law is an added advantage.
GENERAL INFORMATION TO CANDIDATES
1. Applicant must be a Nigerian citizen by birth.
2. Applicants are warned against giving false information or tendering fake certificates. Any false information or fake certificates discovered at any stage will lead to disqualification and subsequent prosecution of the applicant.
3. Applicants must possess a minimum of Second Class Upper Division for holders of First Degree and Upper Credit for HND holders. Computer literacy will be an added advantage in all fields.
4. Applicants must possess certificates of full registration with their respective statutory professional bodies in Nigeria.
5. Applicants who obtained credentials from foreign institutions should ensure the certificates are authenticated by the Federal Ministry of Education and copies of all certificates are to be submitted at chosen aptitude test centres.
6. All applicants must present an O’level West African Examination Certificate (WAEC), in addition to any other results such as NECO. Credit in Mathematics and English is compulsory.
7. NYSC discharge certificate or letter of exemption from NYSC is a compulsory requirement for enlistment.
8. Male applicants must not be less than 1.68 meters tall while female applicants must not be less than 1.65 meters tall.
9. Applicants should be between 22 and 28 years of age by 25 March 2024. Except Medical Officers who should not be more than 30 years.
10. Serving personnel, Soldiers/Rating/Airman and other paramilitary services personnel must obtain a letter of attestation duly signed by the heads of their units.
11. Applicants will be shortlisted for a qualifying aptitude test. The date and time of the aptitude test will be communicated via the Nigerian Navy website.
12. Applicants are to choose any of the following centres for the qualifying aptitude test:
a. Abuja Centres:
- Army Day Secondary School, Mogadishu Barracks.
- Command Day Secondary School, Lungi Barracks.
b. Bauchi Centre:
Command Day Secondary School, Shadawanka Barracks.
c. Owerrinta Centre:

13. Applicants are to appear for the Aptitude Test with the following:
- Photocopies of Degree and NYSC Discharge Certificate.
- Parent/Guardian Consent Form.
- Acknowledgement Form.
- Photocopies of foreign certificates (if any).
14. Applicants are to note that the entire special enlistment process is free of charge and should refrain from giving money to any individual under any guise.
On completion of the application form, applicants are advised to click ‘SUBMIT’ on the portal to generate the applicant’s Transaction ID. GUIDELINES FOR ENTRY INTO NIGERIAN NAVY FOR NNBTS BATCH 36
The NN Recruitment Process commences with advertisements in the print and electronic media for awareness of the general public. Applicants would then begin their application process by filling online application forms. On completion of online registration by applicants, successful ones are invited for Recruitment Examinations. Thereafter, those who emerge successful at the Recruitment Examinations are invited for interview before final shortlisting of qualified candidates.
GUIDELINES FOR APPLICANTS
1. Applicant must be a citizen of Nigeria by birth.
2. Applicants for entry categories A5, B1, B2, B3, C1, D1, D7, E2, E3, E4 and F1 require School Certificate and must be between the ages of 18 – 22 years by 30 April 2024. For entry categories requiring NCE, Diploma (OND), Registered Nurse/Midwife qualifications, such as categories A1, A2, A3, A4, C2, C3, D2, E5, F2, J, K and N as well as categories D3 (Sportsmen and Sportswomen), D5 (Chaplain Assistants, D6 (Imam Assistants) and H (Drivers/Mechanics), applicants must be between ages of 18 – 26 years by 30 April 2024. 3. Applicants with higher qualifications are to provide their statement of results.
4. Applicants must not be married or have children.
5. Applicants must be free from any previous criminal conviction by a court of law.
6. Applicants with any of the following medical/physical challenges are NOT to apply: sight problem, ear problem, communicable diseases, mental problems, stammering, or any physical disability. Applicants who have tattoos are also not to apply.
7. Applicants must not be below the height of 1.69 meters for males and 1.65 meters for females.
8. Applicants are required to possess any of the following educational/professional qualifications:
- West African Senior School Certificate Examination Certificate (not more than 2 sittings and not older than 6 years from the date of application, also applicable to subparagraphs (b – e).
- General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level.
- National Examination Council (NECO).
- National Business and Technical Examinations (NABTEB).
- WAEC City and Guilds or London City and Guild.
- Ordinary National Diploma (OND).
- Any other educational qualification equivalent to those mentioned above.
- Applicants would be required to produce their primary school leaving certificate at the selection interview.
9. All applicants must indicate/provide their National Identification Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN).
10. Applicants with other educational/professional qualifications higher than those stated in paragraph 1 (a-g) are not to apply. Applicants are warned that it is an offence to present false or forged documents for the Recruitment.
11. Certificates or qualifications not declared or tendered and accepted during the Recruitment exercise are not acceptable after recruitment and cannot be tendered for the purpose of change of department or advancement while already in the Nigerian Navy. Only qualifications obtained under proper service provisions are acceptable while in the Nigerian Navy.
12. Applicants are required to print out Applicant’s Declaration Form, Parent/Guardian Consent Form, Local Government Area Certification Form, Police Certification Form and Guarantors Form which must be properly completed, endorsed and presented during the interview.
13. Applicants must come to the recruitment centres with the following documents:
- Photocopies of Birth Certificate or Age Declaration.
- Photocopies of Credentials including First School Leaving Certificate/Testimonial.
- Duly completed Identification Form must be signed by Chairman or Secretary of the Applicant’s LGA or by an officer of the rank of Commander and above (or equivalent in the Nigerian Army and Nigerian Air Force) or Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) and above who hails from the Applicant’s State of Origin.
- Duly completed Parent/Guardian Consent Form signed by Applicant’s Parent or Guardian.
- Four (4) passport photographs duly signed and stamped at the back by (c) above.
- Candidates are to bring the scratch cards of their WAEC,GCE, NECO and NABTEB results to the recruitment centres.
14. Application Form is to be completed and submitted online.
15. Any applicant suspected or confirmed to have impersonated, falsified, forged or presented false document(s) shall be disqualified from the Recruitment exercise and handed over to the appropriate law enforcement agency for prosecution.
16. The date for the Recruitment Aptitude Test will be posted on the NN portal in due course.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRY INTO EACH CATEGORY
A 1 – Marine Engineer Artificer (MEA)
Minimum of OND Lower Credit in Marine or Mechanical Engineering and 5 credits at SSCE or equivalent including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
A2 – Weapon Electrical Artificers (WEA)
Minimum of OND Lower Credit in Electrical Electronic Engineering and 5 credits at SSCE or equivalent including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
A3 – Aircraft Engineering Artificers (Airframe Engine) Qualification
Diploma in Airframe and Engine certified/recognized by ICAO and 5 credits at SSCE or equivalent including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
A4 – Aircraft Engineering Artificers (Avionics & Aircraft Electrics, Electrical / Electronics) (AEA-AA/EEE)
Certificate/Diploma in Aircraft Electrics & Avionics recognized by ICAO and 5 credits at SSCE or equivalent including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
A5 – Shipwright Artificers (SHIPA)
Minimum of SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. OND in Mechanical/Electrical/Welding Engineering also eligible.
B1 – Marine Engineer Mechanics (MEM)
SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Also intermediate City & Guilds or Trade Test II could be considered. Technical bias will be an advantage.
B2 – Weapon Electrical Mechanics (WEM)
SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Also intermediate City & Guilds or Trade Test II could be considered. Technical bias will be an advantage.
B3 – Automobile Mechanics (AM)
Requirements as in B1.
C1- Communications
SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits including English Language, Mathematics and Physics.
C2 – Computer
Minimum of OND Lower Credit in Computer Studies/Computer Science, Desktop Publishing, Office Suite and must also possess SSCE or equivalent with 5 Credits including English Language and Mathematics.
C3 – ICT
Minimum of OND Lower Credit in Computer Studies/Computer Science. Computer literacy is compulsory and must possess SSCE or equivalent with 5 Credits including English Language, Mathematics and Physics. Proficiency or industrial certification in any of the under-listed areas shall be an added advantage:
- Database.
- Computer-Aided Design.
- Personal Computer Maintenance.
- Networking Fundamentals.
- Website Development and Management.
- Programming.
D1 – Seaman
SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits including English Language and Mathematics.
D2 – Survey Recorders
Minimum of OND Lower Credit in Land Survey, Cartography, Geographic Information System and must also possess SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits including English Language, Mathematics, Physics or Geography or Technical Drawing.
D3 – Sportsmen and Sportswomen
Athletes should possess SSCE or equivalent with 4 credits including English Language and proven talents in sports as well as evidence of participation in National Sports Festival. Alternatively, candidates must have participated in any National Championship/All African Games/Olympic Games or Any International Competitions with License from National Sports Federation/State Sports Association.
D4 – Physical Training Instructors
SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits including English Language. Interest and proven talents in sports as well as evidence of participation in sports at Secondary School/State/YSFON level is required.
D5 – Chaplain Assistants
SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits including English Language and Christian Religious Knowledge. Two years experience as clergy/church worker as well as letter of recommendation from 2 Clerics/churches recognized by the NN is required.
D6 – Imam Assistants
SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits including English Language, Arabic and Islamic Religious Knowledge. Two years experience as Imam/Mosque attendant as well as letter of recommendation from 2 Islamic clerics/organizations recognized by the NN is required.
D7 – Firemen
SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits including English Language.
E1 – Writers
SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits including English Language, Mathematics, Accounts/Economics. Computer skill is compulsory. Also OND/NCE in Accounts or Secretariat Administration would be added advantage.
E2 – Store Assistants
SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits including English Language, Mathematics and Economics. Computer skill is an added advantage.
E3 – Caterers
SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits including English Language and Home Management/Food Nutrition. Certificate or any proven experience as a Waiter or Steward is an advantage.
E4 – Ordnance
Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other 2 subjects.
E5 – Project Technicians
Minimum of OND Lower Credit in relevant discipline such as Architecture, Quantity Survey, Civil/Structure/Building Technology, Electrical/Mechanical installation, Urban and Rural Planning, Estate Management, Land Economy and must also possess SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits including English Language, Mathematics and Physics.
F1 – Medical Assistants
SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Health Science and Physics.
F2 – Health Technicians

SSCE or Equivalent with 5 credits including English Language. Current Mechanic apprenticeship certificate and evidence of driving experience with a valid driver’s licence as well as a letter of recommendation [as a mechanic] from past or present employer is required.
J – Journalists
Minimum of OND Lower Credit in Mass Communication, Journalism, Photography, Printing Technology, Information Library, Public Relations, Graphic Arts, Film Making or Cinematography and must also possess SSCE or equivalent with 5 credits including English Language and Mathematics.
